Woven composite material modeling in Abaqus

The question is about how to model composite woven materials in 2D and 3D using Abaqus explicit software. What damage models and criteria need to use? Maybe need to write some VUMAT codes?
Below I attach examples of VUMAT for unidirectional composite. If you have some example models, i will be glad to get it from you.

@BoPeng @tao364744553 can you help answer @oleg.molkov?

Hi @oleg.molkov,
It really depends on the behavior you’re aiming to simulate in Abaqus. In my view, there’s no need to rely on VUMAT for everything.
If you’re performing a static stress analysis, you can use a voxel mesh with the Abaqus/Standard solver. For delamination behavior, cohesive elements or cohesive contact may be more appropriate.
VUMAT is typically used when:

  1. The built-in material models are not sufficient to capture your material behavior accurately, or
  2. The scenario involves highly dynamic and high-speed events, such as drop tests or impact of woven composites.

I just need to simulate a detailed layered model of a woven composite under impact load as in ASTM 7137

ASTM 7137 - is Standard Test Method for Compressive Residual Strength Properties of Damaged Polymer Matrix Composite Plates.
Are you going to simulate a damaged plate to measure strength? Creating a FE model with damaged state would be challenging in my opinion.

How about taking a look at Abaqus fabric material model that is available in Abaqus/Explicit. One purpose of the fabric model is for the woven composite. The fabric model also its user subroutine VFABRIC which allows for more complicated behaviors, which include deactivating a material point when the failure condition is met. The fabric model is available only for elements with the plane stress condition like shell/membrane.
